Dubliners by James Joyce

Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences self-understanding or illumination. Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by child protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence and maturity.James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 February 1882 - 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century.

At the heart of being human is the desire to belong. It can make us unspeakably vulnerable to the manipulations of others. Cult leaders prey on this desire, but so do many unscrupulous operators hiding in plain sight.
Sarah Steel, the creator of the popular 'Let's Talk About Sects' podcast, has researched the cults you've heard of-and dozens you haven't. What strikes her most are not the differences between bizarre cult behaviour and 'normal' behaviour but the depressing similarities. Her work reveals that we are all susceptible to the power of cult dynamics.

The food stories behind your favourite fruits and vegetables. Have you ever wondered who picked your Fairtrade banana? Or why we can buy British strawberries in April? How far do you think your green beans travelled to get to your plate? And where do all the wonky carrots go? Above all, how do we stop worrying about our food choices and start making decisions that make a difference? In an effort to make sense of the complex food system we are all part of, Louise Gray decides to track the stories of our five-a-day, from farm to fruit bowl, and discover the impact that growing fruits and vegetables has on the planet. Through visits to farms, interviews with scientists and trying to grow her own, she digs up the dirt behind organic potatoes, greenhouse tomatoes and a glut of courgettes. In each chapter, Louise answers a question about a familiar item in our shopping basket. Is plant protein as good as meat? Is foraged food more nutritious? Could bees be the answer to using fewer chemicals? How do we save genetic diversity in our apples? Are digital apps the key to reducing food waste? Is gardening good for mental health? And is the symbol of clean eating, the avocado, fuelling the climate crisis?

Taking listeners on a global journey through human history, historian Natasha Tidd examines how lies can change the world around us, from Julius Caesar's deceptive PR machine to the cover ups that caused Chernobyl. From forgeries that created centuries worth of conflict and domination, such as The Donation of C onstantine, the Protocols of Zion and the mysterious Testament of Peter the Great, to mass political and press cover ups including Britain's Boer War concentration camps, a Pulitzer Prize winning whitewash of the Ukraine Famine and France's infamous Dreyfus Affair. Alongside these are examinations of how our retellings of history can turn fiction into fact, including The Spanish Inquisition's deceitful legacy and the demonization of C hinese Empress, Wu Zetian. Plus, an in-depth look at how historic lies can still impact our lives today, such as the deadly legacy of America's Tuskegee Experiment. A Short History of the World in 50 Lies details the profound impact of this secretive side of history and shows that the truth really is stranger - and far more dangerous - than any fiction.
