Description
This course will teach the student how to read and interpret a chemical safety data sheet (SDS). Many SDS are written using chemical terms that most of the public is not aware of. The course will discuss the 16 section SDS found in 29 CFR 1910.1200, Hazard Communication found in the statutes found in the United State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Chemicals come in all forms (solids, liquids and gases). Safe chemical handling, firefighting procedures, chemical exposure, personal protective equipment (PPE), first-aid procedures, and hazardous waste classification and disposal. It is very important to review a SDS before purchase to ensure personnel have the training and PPE to use it safely. The topics to be covered include:

-Introduction/Course Goals

-What chemicals/substances are covered by an SDS Definitions

-Chemical manufacturer, container, foreseeable emergency, label, hazard class, physical hazard, pictogram, and trade secret

-Chemical Manufacturer-Importer Responsibilities

-16 Section Safety Data Sheet SDS

-Training and Education

-The measures employees can take to protect themselves from these hazards, including specific procedures the employer has implemented to protect employees from exposure to hazardous chemicals, such as appropriate work practices, emergency procedures, and personal protective equipment to be used.
