At this time of the year there are lots of "top ten" programmes; this is one of the more unusual. Historian Bettany Hughes surveys her favourite and most intriguing Egyptian mummies, from children to pharaohs, each with an extraordinary story to tell.

With caches of ancient embalmed bodies still regularly turning up in Egypt, there's no end to what can be learnt from them, whether they're in good condition, complete with treasures in the wrapping, or damaged by unscrupulous tomb-robbers (sometimes even in revenge). And of course, new scanning technology is helping us delve inside to discover more about the lives and deaths of those receiving the mummification treatment.
