Tales of Kidd Funkadelic is the eighth studio album by the band Funkadelic, released in September 1976 on the Westbound record label. It was actually released after Funkadelic had left the label, in order to capitalize on Funkadelic's new-found fame. The tracks were outtakes recorded around the same time as Hardcore Jollies and given to Westbound by George Clinton as a contractual obligation. The tracks were belatedly thrown together by Westbound to form another album for release, Tales of Kidd Funkadelic.

Some leftover jams, songs, and funk pieces from the Funkadelic era. George Clinton was in the midst of moving Funkadelic to another label, and the Westbound folk released a bunch of vault material to get another Funkadelic album on the market. There were still some fine cuts, but the random element prevented it from being a great album because it lacked the thematic organization and vision Clinton provided for the concept LPs.

As with James Brown, whose circa-1971 J.B.'s provided this band with its horns and rhythm section, there always seem to be waste cuts on George Clinton's albums. The difference is that Brown's are intended as filler even when they come out inspired, whereas Clinton's feel like scientific experiments even when they're entirely off-the-cuff. The title cut here, a thirteen-minute congas-and-keyboard reconnaissance decorated with a few chants, turns out to be fairly listenable. Which I noticed because it's preceded by a catchy march called "I'm Never Gonna Tell It," their greatest post-doowop experiment yet. Also out there: "Take Your Dead Ass Home!" Not to mention the horns and rhythm section.
