Trade and Technology Networks in the Chinese Textile Industry: Opening Up Before the Reform

Trade and Technology Networks in the Chinese Textile Industry: Opening Up Before the Reform by Carles Brasó Broggi
English | 18 Nov. 2015 | ISBN: 1137494042 | 236 Pages | PDF | 7.4 MB

This book explains the historical origins of the Chinese reform and opening-up process, from the perspective of the trade and technology networks. These networks emerged in the Yangzi Delta during the 1920s and 1930s and built a strong inter-firm relationship between international machinery providers and Chinese textile companies. This process contributed to the industrialization of the Yangzi Delta and suffered during the fragmentation of the Chinese market and the Japanese occupation. During the late 1940s, these networks envisaged an export-oriented development model for China. However, the Chinese Civil War, the trade blockades, and the transition to socialism cut the links between the machinery providers and the Chinese textile companies. These networks migrated to Hong Kong, where they contributed to the city's industrialization during the 1950s and 1960s. Finally, in the late 1970s, these networks were re-established in China with the reform and opening-up process.
