Coding for Wireless Channels is an accessible introduction to the theoretical foundations of modern coding theory, with applications to wireless transmission systems. State-of-the-art coding theory is explained using soft (maximum-likelihood) decoding rather than algebraic decoding. Convolutional codes, trellis-coded modulation, turbo codes, and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are also covered, with specific reference to the graphical structures through which they can be described and decoded (trellises and factor graphs). A special section is devoted to multiple-antenna systems and space-time codes. The author assumes that the reader has a firm grasp of the concepts usually presented in senior-level courses on digital communications, information theory, and random processes.

In order to adapt to the ever-increasing demands of telecommunication needs, today's network operators are implementing 100 Gb/s per dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channel transmission. At those data rates, the performance of fiberoptic communication systems is degraded significantly due to intra- and inter-channel fiber nonlinearities, polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), and chromatic dispersion. In order to deal with those channel impairments, novel advanced techniques in modulation and detection, coding and signal processing are needed.

In a snap decision fueled by boredom, author Pamela Foster and her Vietnam Veteran husband, Jack, sell everything they own and set off for their new home-Bocas del Toro, Panama, a "tropical paradise." Adventure and change are what they're seeking, and it's just what they find when they pick up the leashes of their two 150-pound service dogs and emigrate to a foreign country. Jack is a chronically impulsive former Marine with raging PTSD, and the service dogs, Chesty and Rocca, are mastiffs who are never farther away than the end of a leash.

In 1967, Charlie Chaplin told an interviewer, "I think I like City Lights the best of all my films." Speaking of the film's famous ending, James Agee wrote that "it is enough to shrivel the heart to see." Although City Lights had a long and extremely difficult production history, the final film, in Alistair Cooke's apt words, flows "like water over pebbles, smooth and simple for all to see with no hint of the groaning pressure that had gone into it." It could easily have been otherwise.

Cinema and Colour: The Saturated Image is a major new critical study of the use of colour in cinema. Using the dialectic of colour and monochrome as a starting point, Paul Coates explores the symbolic meanings that colour bears in different cultures, and engages with a range of critical approaches to filmic colour, building on the work of such theorists as Sergei Eisenstein, Rudolf Arnheim and Stanley Cavell.

Chronicon Anonymi Cantuariensis The Chronicle of Anonymous of Canterbury 1346-1365

2008 | 250 Pages | ISBN: 0199297142 | PDF | 13 MB
This is the first complete edition of the Chronicon Anonymi Cantuariensis, a contemporary narrative that provides valuable insights into medieval war and diplomacy, written at Canterbury shortly after the mid-fourteenth century. The previous edition, published in 1914, was based on a manuscript from which the text for the years 1357 to 1364 was missing. Presented here in full with a modern English translation, the chronicle provides a key narrative of military and political events covering the years from 1346 to 1365.Concentrating principally on the campaigns of the Hundred Years War and their impact upon the inhabitants of south-east England, the author took advantage of his position on the main news route between London and Paris to provide a detailed account of a crucial phase in British and European history.

Vladimir de Pachmann was perhaps history's most notorious pianist. Widely regarded as the greatest player of Chopin's works, Pachmann embedded comedic elements-be it fiddling with his piano bench or flirting with the audience-within his classic piano recitals to alleviate his own anxiety over performing. But this wunderkind, whose admirers included Franz Liszt and music critic James Gibbons Huneker (who cheekily nicknamed Pachmann the "Chopinzee"), would by the turn of the century find his antics on the concert stage scorned by critics and out of fashion with listeners, burying his pianistic legacy.
