Brave Men of the Hills Resistance and Rebellion in Burma, 1825-1932

English | 2001 | pages: 197 | ISBN: 1850654077 | PDF | 24,7 mb
Burma was conquered by Britain in the course of three wars fought in 1825, 1852 and 1885, and colonial rule was to last up until 1948, when Burma regained its lost independence. Throughout this period there were several armed uprisings against foreign rule and its social and economic ramifications. This text explores how peasant militancy was first generated and then crystallized into an open challenge to the colonial state. It focuses upon two types of uprisings: the 19th-century resistance which followed the three wars of conquest; and Saya San's revolt of 1930-3. Rather than seeing such Burmese responses as being the symptom of a colonial "pacification" process, the author argues that they were organic exressions of a momentum of resistance originating among a grassroots peasant base.

Bergson and Philosophy
Free Download Bergson and Philosophy By John Mullarkey
2000 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0268021619 | PDF | 8 MB
Various schools of philosophy have tried to claim Henri Bergson as one of their own. In France he has been regarded primarily as an early phenomenologist. In the United States and Britain he is still regarded as a vitalist philosopher. This introductory study looks at Bergson's use of philosophical form and aims to dispel the view that Bergson ever stuck to one type of philosophy at all, be it vitalism or phenomenology. The claim of any one form of thought to the title of "first philosophy" is challenged by the idea of a Bergsonianmetaphilosophy, which states that, in a universe with no static foundations, there can never be first philosophies. In other words, if everything is changing, then this must be no less true of philosophy.Bergson and Philosophyis an important and lucid reassessment of an influential philosopher that sets his work in philosophical contexts.

Adivasis in Colonial India Survival, Resistance and Negotiation

English | 2011 | pages: 386 | ISBN: 8125040943 | PDF | 45,5 mb
How do we define adivasis ? A post-modernist approach will situate them as colonial constructs . However, as this book goes to show, tribals were not just a colonial creation. They were a part of south Asian reality at the time of India s colonisation. Their world was not a monolithic one but the order of stratification was significantly reinforced with the advent of colonialism and its diverse interventions, in terms of the complexities arising out of land settlements and the commercialisation of agriculture. Bringing together contributions from historians, sociologists, social anthropologists and younger scholars, this volume provides a holistic view of the world of adivasis under the British in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It unravels the ways in which the adivasi society negotiated with itself and interacted with the shifts and changes that were taking place during this period. The essays focus on the impact of the sahukar-zamindar-sarkar nexus on the adivasis; the question of dispossession and migration in the face of colonial capitalism and global needs of labour; the process of politicisation and resistance against coercive strategies of control and dominance; the problems within the adivasi society, and the questions of identity and patriarchy; medical colonialism and the adivasi healing systems; and the different ideologies that guided the adivasi politics in colonial India from protests against feudal rulers, to protests against the national movement and later, the struggles led by the socialists and communists. While tracing the trajectory of the life of the adivasis, the book also examines the genealogy of the concept of higher and lower races. Going beyond the colonial and anti-colonial theme to explore the world of the adivasis and their social history, this book makes a conscious effort to locate the present in the context of the past . It contributes to the understanding of the encroaching colonial ideals and intentions in the name of development and civilisation, that continue to impact their lives even today.

A Nice Derangement of Epistemes Post-Positivism in the Study of Science from Quine to Latour
Free Download A Nice Derangement of Epistemes: Post-Positivism in the Study of Science from Quine to Latour By John H. Zammito
2004 | 390 Pages | ISBN: 0226978621 | PDF | 7 MB
Since the 1950s, many philosophers of science have attacked positivism-the theory that scientific knowledge is grounded in objective reality. Reconstructing the history of these critiques, John H. Zammito argues that while so-called postpositivist theories of science are very often invoked, they actually provide little support for fashionable postmodern approaches to science studies.Zammito shows how problems that Quine and Kuhn saw in the philosophy of the natural sciences inspired a turn to the philosophy of language for resolution. This linguistic turn led to claims that science needs to be situated in both historical and social contexts, but the claims of recent "science studies" only deepened the philosophical quandary. In essence, Zammito argues that none of the problems with positivism provides the slightest justification for denigrating empirical inquiry and scientific practice, delivering quite a blow to the "discipline" postmodern science studies.Filling a gap in scholarship to date, A Nice Derangement of Epistemes will appeal to historians, philosophers, philosophers of science, and the broader scientific community.
