Entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics

This book is a brief and accessible popular science text intended for a broad audience and of particular interest also to science students and specialists. Using a minimum of mathematics, a number of qualitative and quantitative examples, and clear illustrations, the author explains the science of thermodynamics in its full historical context, focusing on the concepts of energy and its availability and transformation in thermodynamic processes. His ultimate aim is to gain a deep understanding of the second law-the increase of entropy-and its rather disheartening message of a universe descending inexorably into chaos and disorder. It also examines the connection between the second law and why things go wrong in our daily lives. Readers will enhance their science literacy and feel more at home on the science side of author C. P. Snow's celebrated two-culture, science-humanities divide, and hopefully will feel more at home in the universe knowing that the disorder we deal with in our daily lives is not anyone's fault but Nature's.

Entrepreneurs in Contemporary China explores emerging business practices and related phenomena in contemporary China. It examines new forms of business practices and argues that an emerging strata of private entrepreneurs has entered the economy in recent decades, an under-researched sector of Chinese society. It draws on extensive interviews with business founders and CEOs in present-day China and shows why business-related themes are important to understanding society itself, the forces that underpin social relationships more broadly, and the basis and nature of social change. In capturing the experiences of individuals and their companies amid social and economic challenges, and by uncovering innovative strategies employed by business owners, this book makes a significant contribution to the sociological as well as the business studies literature both through its empirical richness and theoretical innovation regarding considerations of trust, social networks, crisis, gender, and social exchange.

The progressive left believe that the capitalists are the root cause for the inability to have an equal distribution of wealth! They refuse to debate on the facts that capitalism has had the most impact on changing poverty and servitude into freedom and the best living conditions in the world.

The increasing demands made on practitioners in social and health services, as illustrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, can lead to great uncertainty over how to find "the right response" to complex expressions of need and how to account for ethical professional decisions in view of prevailing strategies of 'risk reduction' and managerial accounting. Reflectivity has been recognised as being of central importance for guiding practitioners towards situationally differentiated and accountable practice. However, it is a complex process made up not only of different psychological components and their interplay with educational and organisational contexts, but also of multilevel interactions and purely situational conditions that can have positive or negative effects. The individual and team reflectivity can be learned and supported through various educational and managerial opportunities, sensitively guided personal and professional experiences and specific patterns of interaction which are reviewed in the book.

English as an International Language Education

This volume provides an overview of current issues in English as an International Language (EIL) education and critical intercultural literacy pedagogy. The different chapters are inspired by 'critical interculturality' as a decolonial project that seeks to interrogate the structures, conditions, and mechanisms of colonial power relations that still pervade our increasingly globalising postcolonial societies; they tend to perpetuate forms of discrimination such as sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism and linguicism.
