This is a history of the King James Version of the Bible (known in Britain as the Authorised Version) over the 400 years from its remote beginnings to the present day.
Gordon Campbell, expert in Renaissance literatures, tells the fascinating and complex story of how this translation came to be commissioned, of who the translators were, and of how the translation was accomplished. The story does not end with the printing of that first edition, but introduces the subsequent generations who edited and interacted with the text. The present text of the King James Version differs in thousands of small details from the original edition. Campbell traces the textual history from 1611 to the establishment of the modern text by Oxford University Press in 1769.
Attitudes to the King James Version have shifted through time and territory, ranging from adulation to deprecation and attracting the attention of a wide variety of adherents. It is more widely read in America today than in any other country, and its particular history in there is given due attention.

Author: Martin Heidegger | Narrator: Martyn Swain
In his lucid introduction to this recording, Professor Taylor Carman declares unequivocally that Being and Time by Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) is 'one of the great masterpieces of 20th century philosophy.' And that is despite the fact that it is unquestionably a challenging listen. But by placing it in its historical context - the key work on existentialism between Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) and Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) - it becomes much easier to approach.
As Professor Carman explains, 'Being and Time addresses a seemingly simple question: What does it mean to be?' As far as we know, human beings are the only existing things 'with an understanding of what it is for something to exist' and, furthermore, are aware of their own existence. Heidegger chose the German word Dasein - existence: literally 'being there' - instead of more common expressions such as man, human being, soul, consciousness, etc. And he embarks upon his investigation, considering 'being there in-the-world, in time (past, present, future); discussing 'authentic' and 'inauthentic' living and dying; and the acceptance of impermanence. 'Dasein's existence is pervaded by a primordial kind of anxiety (Angst)', Carman remarks, but points out that the concept of care is central to Heidegger's view: 'to be a human being is to care about something'.

Behind Their Screens What Teens Are Facing (and Adults Are Missing)
Free Download Behind Their Screens: What Teens Are Facing (and Adults Are Missing) by Emily Weinstein, Carrie James, Blackstone Publishing
English | 2022 | ISBN: B0B325DM3V | 6 hours and 38 minutes / Format: MP3 | 138 Mb
How teens navigate a networked world and how adults can support them
What are teens actually doing on their smartphones? Contrary to many adults' assumptions, they are not simply "addicted" to their screens, oblivious to the afterlife of what they post, or missing out on personal connection. They are just trying to navigate a networked world. In Behind Their Screens, Emily Weinstein and Carrie James, Harvard researchers who are experts on teens and technology, explore the complexities that teens face in their digital lives, and suggest that many adult efforts to help-"Get off your phone!" "Just don't sext!"-fall short.
Weinstein and James warn against a single-minded focus by adults on "screen time." Teens worry about dependence on their devices, but disconnecting means being out of the loop socially, with absence perceived as rudeness or even a failure to be there for a struggling friend. Drawing on a multiyear project that surveyed more than 3,500 teens, the authors explain that young people need empathy not exasperated eye-rolling. Adults should understand the complicated nature of teens' online life rather than issue commands, and they should normalize-let teens know that their challenges are shared by others-without minimizing or dismissing. Along the way, Weinstein and James describe different kinds of sexting and explain such phenomena as watermarking nudes, comparison quicksand, digital pacifiers, and collecting receipts. Behind Their Screens offers essential listening for any adult who cares about supporting teens in an online world.

Bad Religion How We Became a Nation of Heretics

English | 2012 | ISBN: B007V5SZMM | Format: M4B / Bitrate: 32 Kbps / 13 hours and 12 minutes + EPUB | 181 Mb
As the youngest-ever op-ed columnist for the New York Times and the author of the critically acclaimed books Privilege and Grand New Party, Ross Douthat has emerged as one of the most provocative and influential voices of his generation. Now he offers a masterful and hard-hitting account of how American Christianity has gone off the rails - and why it threatens to take American society with it.
In a story that moves from the 1950s to the age of Obama, Douthat brilliantly charts traditional Christianity's decline from a vigorous, mainstream, and bipartisan faith - which acted as a "vital center" and the moral force behind the Civil Rights movement - through the culture wars of the 1960s and 1970s and down to the polarizing debates of the present day. He argues that Christianity's place in American life has increasingly been taken over, not by atheism, but by heresy: debased versions of Christian faith that breed hubris, greed, and self-absorption.
Ranging from Glenn Beck to Eat Pray Love, Joel Osteen to The Da Vinci Code, Oprah Winfrey to Sarah Palin, Douthat explores how the prosperity gospel's mantra of "pray and grow rich", a cult of self-esteem that reduces God to a life coach, and the warring political religions of left and right have crippled the country's ability to confront our most pressing challenges and accelerated American decline. His urgent call for a revival of traditional Christianity is sure to generate controversy, and it will be vital listening for all those concerned about the imperiled American future.
