This book offers a comprehensive treatment of the philosophical system of the seventeenth-century philosopher Pierre Gassendi. Gassendi's importance is widely recognized and is essential for understanding early modern philosophers and scientists such as Locke, Leibniz and Newton.

Building upon the idea that our current "environmental question" arises from the history of metaphysics―which privileged thought about Being (or ontology) over the conditions of life―this book reinterprets Heraclitus's notion of physis as the fundamental, emergent potency of life, as the category to-be-thought by thinkers. In so doing, it deconstructs the interpretation offered by Heidegger and so stresses the struggle between the creative force of life and its subjection to the human Logos or "meaning". Physis, understood as the pre-ontological potentiality of life itself, thus becomes the cornerstone of a materialist philosophy of life.

Physics for Computer Science Students With Emphasis on Atomic and Semiconductor Physics

presentation of the classical and quantum free electron theories and their successes and shortcomings (Chapter 23). In order to explain the large differences in the electrical properties of solids as well as the peculiar properties of semiconductors, the existence of allowed and forbidden energy bands is investigated (Chapter 24). In this chapter, we introduce the concepts of the electron effective mass and of holes. Intrinsic and doped semiconductors, their electron and hole densities, and their electrical properties are discussed in Chapter 25. It is now a rather simple matter for the student to understand the behavior and the characteristics of semiconductor devices: diodes, bipolar transistors, field effect transistors, etc. Semiconductor devices are the subject of Chapter 26. The text concludes with two chapters unique to this physics textbook. In Chapter 27, we show how diodes and transistors can be used to construct the logic circuits (gates) that constitute the fundamental building blocks of the computer. Chapter 28 is a layman'S introduction to some of the techniques used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. The laboratory experiments for the first semester are standard in any physics department, and thus we do not feel that is is necessary to include them in this book.

Physeal Injury Other Than Fracture (2024)

This book documents all the ways a growth plate can be damaged, other than fracture. This damage can be inflicted by a wide variety of insults, most of which are uncommon occurrences. They all, however, have two similar characteristics: normal roentgenographs at the time of insult and premature complete or partial arrest noted weeks, months, or years later. Because of this delay, the arrest is often not suspected or recognised early. The resulting bone deformity and relative shortening usually go undetected until corrective surgery is needed. This book emphasises etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of these injuries.
