The Cult are a British rock band formed in Bradford in 1981 with their original line-up. The band has changed lineups over the years, with vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy both writing songs for the band.

At the beginning of its existence, the group acted as one of the founders of the post-punk scene that developed in England. The style of their music was associated in the press with gothic rock, influenced by the mysticism associated with American Indians and psychedelic rock bands such as The Doors.

After moving to London and releasing their second album 'Love', 'The Cult' gained a wider audience, charting at number 4 in the UK and releasing several hit singles such as 'She Sells Sanctuary' and 'Rain'. At the same time, the group moved away from its original sound, moving closer to hard rock. With the release of the album "Electric" and the single "Love Removal Machine", they entered the American market; the album "Sonic Temple" also achieved great commercial success.

In the early 1990s, the group was in crisis due to alcohol abuse and backstage friction between the members. In early 1995, The Cult disbanded after running into insurmountable obstacles during a South American tour. Between 1999 and 2002 the band reunited for Beyond Good and Evil and re-released all of their albums in Asia and Eastern Europe in 2003 and in Japan in 2004. In 2006, the band reunited again for several world tours.

In October 2007, the band released Born into This on Roadrunner Records. Before that, the band had taken part in several festivals and given several interviews, as well as toured with The Who in Europe in the summer of 2007 and was going to do another one in the USA. In May 2008, according to The Gauntlet, The Cult terminated their contract with Roadrunner Records after recording just one album.

In 2012, after a 4-year hiatus, the band released Choice of Weapon on Cooking Vinyl.

In July 2012, while touring Europe on a bridge on the road from the Croatian city of Split to the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, The Cult tour bus had an accident. Vocalist Ian Astbury suffered neck, back and shoulder injuries as a result of the incident.
